New FEA guy using SDRC I-DEAS. Under display defaults are Displacement, Stress, and Strain Energy. How do you get from Strain Energy to Strain. I know strain energy is Nm (J) and strain is unitless. Not sure what I'm missing.

Grant53:

Not sure what I-DEAS is putting out but in general strain energy is 1/2 summation( stress * strain)....for all components of stress and strain....

Hope that helps...

Grant53:
In IDEAS strain is not a default output. You can output strain by going to
Model solution
Examine /Modify
Output selections
Hilite Strain
Store
Ok
Solve again
Of course you should selete ur results first.

Thanks for the help guys, I didn't realize that I had to turn on the strain output. I'm learning a ton about FEA over the past couple weeks. Thanks again!
