I have a german (vogel)gearbox spec that reads: I=3,0. I think this is the gear ratio but was hoping somebody could verify this for me please. (I have given up trying to get answers from vendors, reps, googles etc. The unit is not accessible to me.)

Yes, that definitely is the gear ratio. They use ",0" even if the ratio is a whole number.

I wonder what the "I" stands for?

gear ratio of gearbox translates to Übersetzungsverhältnis des Getriebes.

Don't know what it stands for, but here (in Croatia) we also use "i" for gear ratio... Many of our earlier standards were based on DIN standards so that's no big surprise.

"i" is used in Germany for gear ratio - but I coul'nt tell you why (The term would be "Übersetzung" or Übersetzungsverhältnis")
