what is proper extinguishing firs system that should be used in generator room with diesel day tank?..is it sprinkler system or co2?...and if co2 system is allowable, can only portable co2 cylinders used or should it be automatic system?

Depends .......

Who is requesting the protection? What do they want? Do you have a code requirement?

Do you have many units or just one?

Do you have a water supply for a water based extinguishing system?

I have encountered sprinklers, water mist, co two system and nothing it all depends on the above.

If the unit is lost to a fire will a significant business interruption occur?

Civil defense is requesting the protection...the generator room is located in concrete factory .it is in detached separate room with 2-hrs fire-resisting rating wall.WE have to stick to IBC & NFPa.We have water supply for class II FHC.I forgot to add in the post that it is used as an emergency power supply.I believe that makes difference as i have read in NFPA 110 that fire extinguishing system for EPS should not be CO2 unless combustion air is comming from outside the structure which i can not guarantee in my project as we are still at the planning and layout stage.
