General Inspection Procedure

I am currently working with a customer who is requesting a "General Inspection Procedure" to describe what we do every day in the shop. That is, weld to Sec IX, ascertain all WPS's have been qualified(thats 101 isn't it?), WPQ's have been carried out & in acorcance w/WPS's(101, again), visual/dimensional inspection on tubesheets, nozz locations, flanges, etc. From the components all the way to the overall dimensions. I struggle trying to put common sense into words. Does anyone have an idea where to look for suggestions or samples that will help me get started? Anyhelp is appreciated.

LOL. If only common sense were a bit more common!

Do you have a shop procedures manual you can toss in your customer's direction? Any ISO-9000 related fluff? On the bright side, you know the client won't be asking any challenging engineering questions!

We have a baseline ITP that we use as a minimum--customer requirements are added to it. Do you have something similar?

I would advise that your procedure provide the Purpose, Scope, Responsibility and Reference to an Inspection & Test Plan (ITP) or Traveler and the Documentation (forms/checklists)that you employ. The ITP or Traveler will provide the discrete inspection and test steps.

I would guess that you've got a Quality Control Manual. I would present that as it gives an overall explanation of your required duties.

The operative word here is customer.
If they are asking a fundamental question like this one, the read I get is they are most likely inexperienced.
Section 5 of NB-57 offers a comprehensive list of the responsibilities of the manufacture within the ASME BPV Codes and it is located on

You could use this to teach your neophyte.
