Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows when ASME will be updating the Certification test to the 2009 edition? I am planning on taking the test sometime soon, but am wondering if I should wait until they update the test. Is there a disadvantage of taking the test under the 1994 standard, or would it be better to wait? I have been using the 2009 so I am comfortable with it. If I took the 1994 test, would I need to re-test to be certified to the 2009?

The ASME site indicates that only that version and only that level is renewable, but there's only been one version for certification. The main problem is the price. It used to be $360, but now has crept to $563.

I think it should be easier to pass the '1994 version than the currently non-existant '2009 version. The '2009 standard is complicated with its significant overhaul in vocabulary and addition of Voelker's complex scheme to allow out-of-order evaluation of datum references, as seen here

The fact that they've had, lessee 1994 - 2004 - 2014 - 2015 to create an updated certification, that's 21 years so far, indicates there's something difficult. Some will say it was only released in 2009, how can that be 21 years? It can be 21 years because the '2009 version did not spring fully developed from nowhere in 2009. There was work on it the entire time. Releasing a standard without some way to verify the standard is understandable via test is pretty shabby. ASME owns both ends of the process.

From the ASME page "The exam is currently to the 1994 edition of the Y14.5 standard. The committee has been actively working on revisions to the exam to align with the 2009 edition. Details on the transition will be posted as they become available."

In other words, either it comes out tomorrow, or they scrap the project and it never happens. They are meeting this week in Kansas City, MO
