Gas pipe sizing

I don't normally have to deal with gas pipe sizing because i'm in the electrical trade but I hope you can help answer my question. I am installing a new power vented water heater in my home in a new location, and want to know if I can tap off the 1" line feeding the furnace to feed the water heater as well. The furnace has a 75,000 BTU input and the water heater has a 65,000 BTU input, course the chances that the furnace and water heater will be running at the same time are very remote but I wanted to make sure the volume of gas will be sufice.

Is there a plumbers and gas fitters website that gives good info on these topics?

I would very surpriced if a local gas company would allow uncertified personel to do this job. A certified service man should be able to tell you if the supply line have enough capacity.

A water heater will only use a fraction of the gas that the furnace uses and a 1" supply line should handle the additional load easily, so long as it's not excessively long.
