Hi Fellows

I am designing a Gantry for OH&S purposed for a dam, in-case someone injure and easy to lift for succor.
The client said design for 100kg weight capacity.

I would like to ask is there any min. load requirment for designing a gantry for lifting people? and which Australia Standard is proper to use, AS1418?

The AS 1418 suite of standards is the correct choice for the design of cranes.

The proposed 100kg capacity sounds a bit light. A large man with sodden clothing and boots, together with mass of the harness, rope, will result in a lift of somewhat more than 100kg. By comparison, AS1170.1 uses an unfactored concentrated live load of 1.4kN on roofs and roof elements to account for a force imposed by a person (ref. Clause 3.5.2).

Note that you will need to factor this load more than you would for an inanminate object, since personnel safety is involved. For example, AS 1418.17-1996 Cranes (including hoists and winches) - Design and construction of workboxes uses a design load factor of 2.5 times the static load to take account of the hoisting factor and that personnel are being lifted.
