Hi,
I have a question with regards the design of gabion baskets and compaction of soil.

I am looking at a problem which involves the retention of soil up to 4m high. My thoughts were to look at a gabion basket solution and my loading would be full hydrostatic loading along with active pressure from the soil.
If i was just to have soil compacted at 150mm layers using a 3 tonne rammer at the soils nature angle of repose, how would I go about on proving this numerically.I have seen such design on various walls but dont understand how to complete such a design?

any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sheram

Have you asked the engineering support people from Maccaferri (spelling?). They are organized to be very helpful to designers considering spec'ing their products. You can probably get a referral from whoever sells gabions locally in your area.

Not sure why you would use full hydrostatic lateral pressures with a open drainage gabion basket. There are standard design configurations available if you search. You should have a geotextile behind the gabion basket to keep the retained material from washing into the open graded basket fill.
