What is the effect of applying 50 HZ to a transformer designed for 60 ?

Many discussions about this, particularly in "Electric Power & Transmission & Distribution" and some in "Electric motors, generators & controls engineering".
 
Short answer: more heat in the transformer. Possibly enough to be an issue.

 
Risk of core saturation. You should try to keep the V/Hz ration constant, so at 50 Hz the primary voltage should be reduced accordingly.
