bc,

no you can't create a view from a 3D-Model. Below find an
excerpt from a commnet made in the UGS BBS:

[cite]
In V19 we introduced Solid Edge 2D Drafting. You can open Draft files
created with Solid Edge Draft. Solid Edge Draft and Solid Edge 2D Drafting
have the same file format (.dft). Solid Edge 2D Drafting will only work with
Draft files created in V19 and beyond. You can do basic edits to the files
created in Solid Edge Draft and you can save the files. Solid Edge 2D
Drafting can be used as a markup tool for Draft files. Drawing views derived
from 3D models cannot be modified in any way. They cannot be selected in 2D
Drafting. Also you cannot dimension to drawing views created from 3D Models.
It is not indended to be used as a drafting tool for 3D models. Solid Edge
2D Drafting is not the same thing as Solid Edge Layout.

/Edit

some more info:

- The license feature is solidedge2ddrafting
- It is a completely separate executable from Solid Edge.
- You cannot have both Solid Edge and Solid Edge 2D Drafting loaded
on the same machine.
- There is no GTAC support for this version. There will be a mailing
list where someone can get help from other users.
- There are no service packs.
- There is no applications interface (API).
- It does not support managed document workflows (Insight or Solid
Edge Embedded Client).

so it's just what the name implies: a drafting tool and noting more

Thanks guys - I was afraid that was the case.
I've got a possibility of some 'spare-time' drafting work so I was wondering if I could use it for that, but it would be from Solid Edge 3D models.
Looks like I'll have to find another way.

bc,

you could obtain a 'Travel License' or a 'Home License' from
the license server at UGS -- maybe that could solve your
problem. There is one things, however: the drafts created
with those license type will cary a watermarking. This
will disappear when printed with your normal license.

The other 'niggle' I have with the Free package is that it can't be installed on the same machine as a viewer or express reviewer.

So those who want to produce sketches/autocad style drawings, can do so, but they can't look at a 3D model...
