Determine the load supported and type of soil.

Determine the allowable capacity of the soil.

Determine the type of foundation suitable for the load and soil.

Size accordingly. You might want to consider retaining a geotechnical consultant.

Pretty basic... Dik

Eabrar,
Note that the "allowable capacity (pressure) of the soil" that dik referred to may be limited by settlement or actual bearing capacity. Beware that many of the "presumptive bearing pressures" published in building codes for varying soil types may be too great under some circumstances. They tend to ignore very important factors; groundwater location, tolerance of the structure to settlement, loading patterns, etc.

eabrar - if only for your general knowledge, go to:
and you can download a number of manuals about bearing capacity, settlement, etc. If you plan on trying to do some geotechnical engineering yourself - DON'T. Get some local expert advice. This may, to some, seem like an "easy" field - but it is not - it is fraught with danger. Don't dabble in it.
