Foundation Settlement 1

Dear,

A year before we constructed the foundation of Cement Silo capacity of 500tons. The raft foundation size was 6m x 6m x 0.8m. Now we are facing a problem of settlement as foundation is sinking on 3 sides. The whole area was back filled. The site used for the Ready Mixed Concrete plant and now a days there were too much water used around the foundation which is causing the water logging of that area. So anybody will suggest the solution for the stabilization of foundation to avoid further settlement.

backfilled with what and was this engineered fill and how deep... you have an 18' approx silo by 45' high on soil stressed to about 2500 psf... pretty severe for waterlogged stuff, I would think...

You need to contact a good geotekkie right away...

Yes it is leaning away on one side. One solution which comes to my mind was to remove the soil around, approx. 1m strip,cos this soil has saturated too much with water and reinforced that strip with concrete. Will that serve the purpose or ??

YOu need a really good geotekkie involved.

I don't know the type of failure or for that matter the soil profile. If other than differential consolidation. It's stressed fairly high for anything but good soil. There are several approaches to repair and some may not work.

Did you do a site investigation for the project? Was there a desiccated crust? Has not structural and geotechnical community forgotten about the history of soil mechanics? See Tschebotaroff in 1951! See Bjerrum's paper in the 1956 ISSMFE Conference on edge failure of a large oil tank. See attachment.

Sounds like a good underpinning job for some specialist contractor . . .

You want to see a real failure... catch the Transcona failure... just after Terzaghi came out with his failure mechanism... Russians know that Winnipeg is just west of Transcona <G>.
