foundation design: how to set the load

Hi all,

How to set the loads that are within or on the building? Is there any standard or regulation with a list of the foundation design load according to the building type?

Short answer is no. There's no quick reference.

Local building codes will dictate what loads based on what occupancy. And the actual foundation design depends heavily on the type of framing used in the structure above

Hi Pietro82, in the construction business, the structural engineer will give the loads, moments to the geotechnical engineer for the foundation design accordingly.

Yah pietro, depending where you are in the world there will be a similar section in the building code that goes over the different live/dead/siesmic/ext load conditions you are designing for (ie. Canada Building Code 4.1; IBC chapter 16).

Unless you are in Turkey I wouldn't use that document as your design basis though, I skim read it and some things seem wonky and off compared to Canadian code at least.

Pietro, in Italy there is no standard loading table for building types.
In the national construction standards (NTC08) you have the bulk weights of various construction material (permanent loads), plus you have the variable loads, occupancy, seismic, wind and snow loads, plus the combination coefficients plus the safety factors according to various design approaches according to the Eurocode scheme. Something is similar to the ASCE-SEI standard, some ain't.

Structurals know the final loading only after they've designed their building by a commercial software.
Also, loading varies from a small area to the other small area.

You may estimate the loading though if you only need a ballpark figure. The estimate is not a quick business.
