Forward and reverse? No idea what a negative fault would be.

Forward fault limited by positive sequence impedance,
Negative fault limited by negative sequence impedance?

Just did search terms "forward" and "reverse" in some random GE and SEL manuals and got no results.

johndaniel,

This refers to the type of fault detected, and it is based on the voltages and currents that are present during the fault.

Rather than trying to explain, if you paste this address into your searchbar, it will give you a pdf from Schweitzer on negative sequence relay operation. Starting on page 3, it describes the types of faults you are enquiring about.
