COULD SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO CALCULATE HOW MUCH FORCE CAN A FRICTION CONE USING LINNING CAN TRANSMIT.
I HAVE A GEAR WITH A CLUTCH CONE FOR ENGAGING A DRUM AND I NEED TO KNOW IF THE TORQUE NEEDED FOR LIFTING A LOAD CAN BE TRANSMITTED THROUGH THIS FRICTION CONE.

THANKS.............

Resolve your axial clamping force into the force normal to the mating faces. The maximium torque transmitted is the normal force x the mean radius of the mating faces x the coefficient of friction:

T = Fn * Rmean * Mu

An appropriate safety factor needs to be applied. If the clutch will be slipping in normal operation the heat dissipation needs to be considered, and the allowable loading of the friction material must be considered.

Shigley does a real nice job on this subject, laying out the derivation for this as well as that for brakes.

They elementry textbooks on static and dynamics?

THANKS NOTNTAS I´LL TRY TO WORK OUT THE FORMULA.
AND I´LL CHECK THOSE TEXT BOOKS IF I CAN FIND THEM.
