In tools>materials>assign materials when I selected for example brass for the material and then later on replace it with steel there is a red circle next to the brass material. Is there a way to get rid of this?

What version of NX are you using? And could you at least post an image showing where this 'red circle' is being seen?

Well, if you don't want to see the 'red circle' simply toggle OFF the 'Used' column in the Material navigator.

Sorry for the simplistic 'solution' but there's no way that I'm aware of to actually remove the references to previously assigned materials.

If you go to Tools->Materials->Manage Materials and then set the material list to Local Materials. You should now see the material that is not being used (red circle). Highlight it and the delete icon in the lower right hand is available to delete this unused material.

Some expanding questions on materials in nx:
I'm looking for the material 42CrMo4 where can I find it ?
The nx library doesn't offer me 42CrMo4 or why is there nothing like search?
I know that there are different material codings ...
Is there a material library extend the ootb lib / where can I find it ?
regards
