Footing / thickened base of Slab grade for Partitions 2

Dear All,

Do non-load bearing RC walls (100mm thick, 7m in Length & 3m in height) need footing? or the thickened base of grade slab is enough to distribute this self weight?? Is there any specified Code references or guidelines available?

Partition wall can stand on thickened slab without problem. You can check the stress on tributary area (in your case b=tw+ts) to ensure adequate slab thickness.

Since it is non-load bearing wall I provided the thickened slab under the wall. But another consultant wants the footing under this. They asked for code specification for the same that states that no footing is required under non load bearing wall. There is no such requirement, right?

We can't comment on the local codes without knowing which one you are designing to.

However, if you can prove the slab on grade is adequate, then I don't see the problem.

In general, the code will not tell you "what is not required", or "not to do". If no specific direction is provided in the code, one shall use engineering judgement to determine appropriate action. In this case, if shear strength is adequate, you can return the favor, and ask another consultant to provide code provision that states footing is required under partition walls.

Also note that thickened slab is essentially a strip footing.

Though the shear capacity is enough to carry the partition wall load, the consultant simply wants the foundation underneath. Later, we agreed to provide tie beam and it went off well.

Besides passing the concept behind your original design, I'll go with the consultant wish as well, as, I guess, he's the owner's representative. Keep this change documented, it may be useful later.
