What do you mean by a flywheel damper? A dual mass flywheel (which are not especially common) or the springs in the clutch?
Either way they are there for different reasons. The crankshaft damper is there to suppress crankshaft bending and torsional modes, which will break most crankshafts. The flywheel damper is there to prevent torsionals travelling down the drievtrain, to improve NVH. The clutch centre springs also reduce take-up shock, I imagine.
