Do fluid couplings ever howl like an air horn when they slip. I've got 2 x 400HP motor/gearbox units driving a conveyor and recently when it gets at about 60% rated load something starts howling in the area of the couplings. Not sure if it a slipping drive roller, coupling, or something else. Everything is fairly new. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Fluid Couplings do not usually howl. They throw off an awful lot of air when they are going at full speed, this air movement through a guard could be the source of the noise.

Also do you mean 60% speed or 60% load. If you mean load then I would examine any belts and bearings in the area.

If the equipment is fairly new as you say then contact the manufacturer.
