Flexible cords on Welders 1

We are an industrial facility that has many electric arc welders. One of our plants is using SO cord wired directly from the welder to a disconnect. Reading into articles 400.7-400.8 and 368.56 I came to the conclusion that they have to have a permanantly mounted receptacle fed from the disconnect and a plug on the welder. Is that correct?

I believe you're correct. The idea is that if the machine is so 'parked' as to be directly wired in then you should be running more protection than just an SO cord can provide. That means you run flex conduit to the machine.

But, if the machine is portable as denoted by a plug you can run SO.

Most welders are on wheels and therefore are considered portable. Connecting via a cord to a disconnect switch is common practice in these cases.
