Hi guys

What is the easiest way to fix a wood top plate to a square HSS header. I am hoping to screw fix through the 2x4 into the side face of the HSS with metal teks. I do not particularly want to use thru-bolts which bolt through the plate and the HSS.

Regards

Can you use powder actuated fasteners? Hilti, Ramset, etc.?

in my home building days, we actually had powder actuated nailers that would shoot through beam flanges up to about 5/8" thick. I was amazed the first time I used one.
How thick is the HSS?
You probably also use blind bolts.
Lindapter makes some good ones.

I agree w/ above. How about glue??

But I am partial to powder actuated fasteners... quick, fairly cheap and give a quantifiable capacity. Also - fun to use!!

It depends on the thickness. You can usually get self drilling self tapping screws fastening to steel up to 1/4" or so. I have also uses PAF's. I beleive the current Hilti product is the X-U. The Hilti Product Technical Guide provides recommendations for this situation.

Mike-
I agree 100%.
I loved using those things.
POW! Nothing like blasting a nail through steel.

Mikey... I use Bulldog PL Premium for gluing steel to wood... should work for gluing wood to steel <G>
