Hi, I am currently designing something that requires the use of composite boards and i was wondering if anyone had any tips to fix hinges to it (needs to be fairly close to the edge) as i have never used composites before. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am sure you will get more help if you explain your system more completely. What material, thicknesses, loads, environment. From what you have said all that I can recommend is being 3D from the edge if bolting. Your other option is adhesive. Hopefully we will be more help in the next round.

As a very rough way to think about it, common laminar composite can be treated pretty much as you would a wood part (most espcecially plywood, which is of course a laminar composite).

Glue, rivets and bolts are the most common joining methods. About the only ones that can't be used are welding or brazing.

NB: if you rivet, don't percussion rivet, squeeze or blind rivet instead. If you glue, make sure that the glue chemistry is compatible with the composite matrix.
