Back to the Supreme Court nomination. It looks like now that the Senate will vote this weekend. There are apparently 4 or 5 undecided at the moment, and they are being harassed by protesters who are all against confirmation. I would have thought that harassing a Senator who you want to vote your way is counterproductive.

There must be many life lessons to be learned/re-learned in this fiasco too. As a father, with fall break coming up and a daughter and son are coming home, there are several that are on my mind. Do not assault anyone. Protect yourself. Don't delay in reporting when you think something illegal has happened. Stay in control; don't drink/smoke too much. Don't go past or faster than the line/timeline of consent. Wrap that rascal! You can have a good time, it should be mutual; but nobody needs to get hurt or taken advantage of.

While the number of sexual assaults has decreased by 50%, the number of people assaulted is still rather gigantic. I would definitely be more worried about the females in my family being assaulted than the males in my family being falsely accused.

The sad reality is that the overwhelming number of assaults are committed by family members.

Sexual assault is a horrible thing for anyone (nearly 1/3 of the numbers above are biological men being assaulted). Being accused of it when it isn't true is also horrible in a different way. Because of an accusation that is proving to be at odds with verifiable facts, Brett Kavanaugh has been barred from teaching at Harvard, he doesn't expect to be able to continue coaching girl's basketball, and he does expect to be looked at as a pervert for the rest of his life. Anyone who thinks that this is either trivial or fair has a very different definition of those terms than I was taught in school.

bothers me. It is much like saying "Fires happen much more often than floods so I don't need flood insurance on the riverfront." An innocent person is, well "innocent". I was once accused of doing something that I did not do. It turns out that by asking a coworker to wait an hour before I could help them was an action that was worth making untrue statements to HR that had a high potential to ruin my life. Luckily another co-worker heard the exchange and stood up for me, but when the accusation is enough to crater a life none of us are safe.IRStuff said:

The possibility of assault, for many women, is at least a daily, if not hourly, worry. Men do not have anything remotely similar to worry about, primarily because a "she said, he said" case is rarely pursued by the woman because, usually, the woman gets their reputation ground up as well, in addition to the trauma of the actual assault.
I don't think that what happened to Kavanaugh is necessarily fair or unfair; it's certainly unfortunate and sad for him, if it is an untrue accusation, but we'll probably never know one way or the other to anyone's satisfaction.
But, the reality in America, is that sexual assaults routinely occur, and most women don't go forward, precisely to avoid treatment like what Trump last gave Ford, either mocking or blaming of the victim, or, "Gee, you wore awfully provocative clothing, or "You shouldn't have gone to that party or gotten drunk."
We have, for centuries, given men a pass, and continue to do so, even as recently as the past few years, where girls aren't allowed to dress a certain way in school because it's "distracting or provocative" for the boys. THAT is just plain BAD upbringing and a BAD value system; unfortunately, we're speaking to power, and the power, in the hands of mostly men and in the entertainment industry, such that women are fair game and simply sexual objects to be enjoyed and tossed aside with essentially no consequences to the man, given that less than 1% of all cases of sexual assault result in an incarceration.

You raise an interesting point and I've thought about this recently. The perpetrator is solely responsible for his/her actions but where does prudence enter into the equation? If tonight I decide to walk through the East New York section of Brooklyn flashing a wad of bills I know what's going to happen.

When you see cases like the 40 year old guy that raped the 12 year old girl in Arkansas that Hillary got off through some really sleazy legal maneuvering (including calling the 12 year old a "slut who just liked older men"), and then Hillary bragging that she knew he was guilty but she was representing him not the law you want to say "lock up the lawyers who represent this trash", but I'm sure that the guy never said "I did it" and she was able to skirt the cannons of ethics by saying "I did not know that he was guilty, doesn't everyone deserve representation?". With pit bull defense attorneys the victim of the crime is too often victimized again. You cannot fault someone for refusing to go through the result of an arrest. Probably all 7 of the cases that went to trial in the graphic above were accompanied by a properly administered rape kit and DNA match. Without that empirical evidence why would someone go through the ordeal a second time?
I know a lot of women who think that the answer is firearms training and concealed carry. Don't let a rapist get to court, send him to the morgue with his penis exposed (or blown off). I have never been able to fault a woman for that view and I know one woman who pulled her gun on an attacker and he ran away (certainly to rape again) but she didn't have clear cause to shoot him. The police are not really about "protection", they are more about deterrent and punishment. My son and his wife took a concealed carry class last month, they had had to wait 7 months for an opening in the class schedule. The student body was 80% women and the instructor commented that there were more men than usual in the class. Just anecdotes, but I think they may shine some light on how some women are handling this problem.

Just as abusers have a "vic-DAR," I think rapists have a similar ability to detect their most likely victims. And certainly, while prudence is an issue, given that the bulk of assaults are from non-strangers, it's clear that prudence alone is nowhere sufficient, as women are likely to be assaulted by people they know and trust to some degree.

Judge Kavanaugh expressed himself well. Interesting how the Left is downplaying the sexual assault allegations and now they're going after his temperament. So he said a few things out of turn during the last session, big deal; what would any of us do in that situation? In Pennsylvania, where I reside, the state constitution says a man is entitled to his good name. He was simply defending his name as well as the reputations of his wife and children. The Left reminds me of the line from the Godfather: "It's business; it's not personal". To them it's all about destroying people in any way possible; the ends justify the means. Granted, there should be a rigorous process for someone aspiring to a lifetime appointment but a nominee shouldn't be expected to endure the Passion of the Christ either.
The entire confirmation process is a disgraceful charade; the Left has been out to get Kavanagh from Day 1. One of my US Seanators, Bob Casey Jr. is extremely radical; he was opposed to Kavanaugh before he was nominated. He's nothing like his father, who truly was a decent man.

I think this statement of the ABA committee means more than one impassioned speech in his and his family's defense. Judicial temperament was not an issue on that day, as he was not acting as a judge. The issue was his integrity, and he defended it as any good lawyer would.
