Firm Registration Requirement

We are a civil engineering and surveying firm in Michigan that has several engineering and surveyors who hold licenses in other states. We do not have offices in other states and currently our firm is not formally registered in these states. We are being told in one state that our firm is required to be registered with the Secretary of States Office before we can survey any more sites in that state. We are proceeding with the firms registration process, but does this mean that we need to do this in every other state?

In other words, in addition to being licensed as a professional in a state, do you also have to be a registered firm?

This is a requirement by some states...read the state regulations you are working in. I'm aware of it in effect for all the states bordering PA, where I practice. Typically, a solo surveyor or engineer, registered in a different state can do solo work in that state...but if a firm does work, then the firm usually needs to be registered as you mentioned and identifying the employee that has the state specific license. I don't know the reasoning behind it, other than another money grab.
