Quick question - I am working off of old Firewater Piping U/G system that is FM/UL approved.

I have HDPE Piping ( SDR 9 / 200 psi) that is applicable to AWWA C906, which is a listed material for NFPA 24. I have some molded HDPE Fittings going up to a certain size, but also have some Fusion Bonded Epoxy coated Ductile Iron Fittings per AWWA C116. I also have CS Steel Piping that is the same size range as that of HDPE, but is Coal-Tar Enamel Lined both internally and externally per AWWA C203.

I heard from a buddy of mine that NFPA 24 U/G Piping should be Cement Mortar lined. However, I do not see anything in NFPA that directly states this.

There's Para 10.1.6 for lining of buried pipe - and it basically says if you are not connecting to the fire dept. connection then the lining shall be in accordance with Table 10.1.1, which does list AWWA C906 under the plastics section. The steel pipe with AWWA C203 is also listed. Under Ductile Iron - AWWA C116 is also listed.

Section A.10.1.6 also states that the following standards apply to the application of coating and linings... which includes AWWA C116 and AWWA C203.

Is there something I am missing with respect to Cement Mortar (specifically) being a requirement for Firewater NFPA 24 U/G Piping??

All listed piping for NFPA 24 is not cement lined and does not have to be cement lined. Only the materials specified to be cement lined are required to be cement lined..

AWWA C906 is listed and is polyethylene and is not cement lined.

Fusion Bonded Epoxy coated Ductile Iron Fittings per AWWA C116 is listed and is epoxy coated, not cement lined.

AWWA C203 is a coal tar protective coating and is listed in NFPA 24, and is not cement lined.

Most ductile iron pipe is cement coated. The NFPA listing is for AWWA 151 ductile iron pipe centrifugally cast, cement lined.

Free access to the NFPA is on the website.

C906 HDPE pipe is extensively used for UG fire mains.
