Am involved in installing structured cabling in renovated elementary school. We are suppossed to install a sleeve in a four hour rated block firewall. 1. Can we do this? 2. What is largest diameter penetration allowed?

You can apply "Chartek" on the surface of the wall. "Chartek" is a exposy material, which foams up into thick insulation material when heated up. It has been tested and approved for offshore application use against hydrocarbon fire for up to 2 hours (H120 rating), it probably last much longer in cellular fires, which is much less severe. Try talk to them.

Nu-chem is the other company making the similar product.

You can put whatever size penetration you want through that wall so long as you seal the hole when you're done with a UL-listed 4-hour firestopping product such as those mentioned by SooCS.

UL has very specific approved configurations for rated penetrations. To maintain the rating of the wall, you must use a UL approved design or have UL provide an engineering opinion on your design.
