Hey Guys,

Recently I have encountered a situation that up to 4th floor steel to be fire proofed and roof steel itself not.

So I asked architectural engineer that a steel column goes above floor to support roof steel can be partially painted b/w 4th to roof (for reducing cost).

And he said ok, it can be.

But later I thought, would this work if a member was partially fire rated and partially painted? Do Any one has seen like this already?

Same like in galvanizing process too, can't we do partially, right?

Thanks in advance!!

I don't know what the requirements are, but normally structure supporting a rated assembly has to be rated also.

That depends on the fire source and level.. If the fire source around ground , it will affect the supporting columns for 5-6 meters..The common practice for petrochemical plants, the fire proofing is provided for the columns of pipe racks, vessels for 5-6 meters..

If you define the structure, roof level , probable fire source you may get specific responds..

So, we can't make steel member partially fire-rated, Right?

Thanks in advance!!

As we all know steel is an excellent conductor of heat. If you you have fire on the top floor that affects a non fire-rated member that is continuous below you can get what could quickly happen to the continuous member below.

This a question that is usually answered by the "AHJ" (Authorities Having Jurisdiction), i.e. Code officials. Direct the question to them as anything answered on the Internet is guess work.

Where are you located and what is the building code you are working under?

yeah, it's for Canada, that code is CISC

Thanks in advance!!

Dear Veer007,

I asked you to describe the structure and storey heights... if the storey height for the 4th storey is greater than 5m, and the fire source at 4th floor , the fire proofing for the roof steel may not be required.

I will suggest you to conduct with local fire department for the local requirements.
