Hello All,

This is my first post. This looks like a really good forum. I have searched the forum for "twin disc finite element modelling" but nothing was found. So I thought I would post.

Does anyone have any FE modelling experience of rotating twin discs in contact. I am running friction and wear tests and I have modelled the discs in solidworks, but wanted to validate my physical testing with the FEA. I would like to look at contact stresses, deformations and wear (ideally on a macro, micro and nanoscale). I will be using Abaqus 6.9 to run the FE models.

Does anyone have any experience in this or can point me to any direction for more advice/work in this area.

Thanks

huh? "validate my physical testing with the FEA"

normally you would validate the FEA with test data.

what failure criteria are you going to use to predict wear?

have you measured contract stresses and displacements in the tests?

Hello,

Thanks for your responses. I will try my best to provide answers to your questions.

I havent actually run any physical tests yet. I am planning to wear the diameter down 500 microns and assess the wear on the surface. I will measure the wear using a friction and wear testing machine, running 2x 60mm diameter discs together in contact (with induced slip). The discs will be loaded with 750N normal load.

Therefore I will be measuring the wear, and doing my best to calculate the contact stresses by hand calculations, but really wanted to use FE to help with this.

The discs will be statically loaded, but I wondered how far I could use FE to simulate the friction and wear test.

Thank-you for your help...

P.S. Not sure if I will run a static or dynamis analysis.

Thanks

Probably a static run. IIRC you just need the load distribution to correlate measured wear to contact stress and velocity. Unless the load distribution changes with these minuscule changes in surface profile that is all you should need.

So I can simulate the discs in contact for say 1 million cycles on FE to assess the wear and contact stress using a static run. What would dicate the choice of modelling a dynamic analysis?

Thanks

OptiEng,

There is an Abaqus specific forum here that might be more appropriate.

Is this for optical grinding?

Search for "tire" in the Abaqus manual. Tire manufacturers have worked with Abaqus a lot to be able to model rolling contact without actually rolling (if that makes sense).

More details like a picture or your current model would help. Are you concerned with temperature or change in geometry with time?

I hope this helps.

Yes i will post on the Abqus website too, thanks for the advice.

This not so much for optical grinding, its more about assessing the wear behaviour of different materials in contact.

I have seen some examples in the abaqus manuals which are quite helpful.

I would be concerned with temperature and change in geometry over time.

I have attached a picture below, showing the set up of the discs in friction and wear tester.

Thanks

OptiEng.

A static FEA will give you contact stresses and the deformation. Contact stresses will be highly non-linear with load for cylinder on cylinder contact and because the cylinders are so short the distribution across the face will vary considerably.
