I am wanting to add a water feature to my dog daycare business. I want to create a 4' wide, 1' deep and 1000' long recirculating river on my property that is safe for dogs to both play in and safely drink from.
What type of cost-effective filtration system options are available to keep that water safe for as long as possible?
What combination of filtering and water purging would be ideal?
What purge frequency of entire system would be required?

FYI - The river will be used by 10-30 dogs regularly. There will also be between 2 & 4 small pools 30'x10' X 1 ft deep along the length of the river. The river will circulate continuously. Flow rate has not been determined at this time.

Any insights on this would be great.

Thank you.

As the article from the AKC notes, communal water may have all sorts of problems.

It probably would be best practice to treat the water like you would a swimming pool. Chlorinate the water, use a swimming pool filter, and discard roughly 10% of the water each day.

I agree with bimr's comments, but possibly add a form of mesh filtration before the pool filter to catch the dog hairs. These hairs tend to get everywhere and are small enough to get through a standard leaf strainer and v good at blocking the sand filter
