Does anyone know how to overcome the limitations of the data filtering (AutoFilter)? When you click the arrow for the filter, "only the first 1000 unique entries in the list appear".

If you are looking for a specific record, autofilter on another field first to cut down the number of choices.

From the following tip: Excel's AutoFilter will only show 1000 unique items from a list. If you have more this and the value you want is not in the drop-down list, you can click Custom and type the value in.

Thanks for the help. This is not my spreadsheet so I'm just trying to help a friend. The option to filter on another field will work provided the user is not looking for something that would be filtered out using this method. As to typing in a "Custom" filter, this will work fine if the user types in the value to match the item in the list exactly. If not, it will not be found. I'm told that the user needs to be able to "pick from a list". I have suggested data validation with =vlookup(). This will work if they only need to pick from one list. I haven't heard back yet whether it is sufficient. Again, thanks for the input.
