FILLER METAL - POSTWELD HEAT TREATMENT

Hi,

E (R)410NiMo according to ASME II Part C, require postweld heat treatment on test assembly.
If we have to perform a repair by welding without postweld heat treatment,(machined part, and small defect on non pressure part by example) is it required to supply the filler metal without heat treatment, which is representative what we are doing??

Do you have a procedure qualified without PWHT? I think regardless of how small a repair this is, I would want to find a way to do the PWHT locally, either torch or blanket. You will end up with a hard and brittle weld and HAZ w/o doing at least an 1125-1150f Post Weld. Just my opinion.
 
The ER410NiMo is a material that has good ductility even in the as-welded condition versus ER410. With that said, the PWHT requirement is for the base material (if 410). I would suggest you investigate local PWHT to ensure proper tempering of the base metal heat affected zone.
 
Hi,

In fact we have the 2 cases, one WPS qualified with PWHT, and an other without.
For the first case it is for repair by welding cast parts which are not in final machined condition , and in the second case it is for final cast part machined, and it is to avoid possible deformation due to the PWHT.
Is it possible to use a filler metal supplied with PWHT, and use it with WPS without PWHT

Yes, as long as the WPS is qualified without PWHT for the noted filler metal.
