Looking for the filler alloy for Manual GTAW welding of 20cb-3, UNS N08020. Is there a book or data sheet that I can find all of these items in?? Our WPS says use 316L. My predesessors have shown them selves to be less than thorough and accurate.

We have procedures qualified with E/ERNiCrMo-3,and E/ER320LR depending on Customer requirements. As of late, most of our Customers have specified E/ERNiCrMo-3. There is a possibility of creating a crack sensitive chemistry when using E/ER316(L).

What does the "LR" stand for?? Typically "L" stands for Low Carbon. We had that filler in Ø 1/16 and nobody knew what it was used for. How lucky are we........... Thanks for all of the info.
Tom

In the case of 320LR, the LR stands for "Low Residuals", such as P and S, that cause hot cracking in this fully austenitic weld metal.

Carpenter-20 it is. We are an OEM that makes fluid sensing devices. We don't know the application. The customer is ordering a repeat product that they have ordered in the past. All great info. Will this filler work for the other Carpenter-20 grades, such as 20Mo-6??

No, it will not. For 6%Mo grades you need higher alloy filler. I presume that there is no post-weld anneal on these parts. The easiest bet for 6%Mo alloys is to use a 'C' type NiCrMo filler. Don't use alloy 625 for filler, it does not play well with others.
Is Carpenter still using rare earth additions for deoxidation? There used to be enough variation in residual rare earth content from heat to heat that weldabiltiy of 20Cb3 was a real issue. We use generic alloy 20 (or 20Nb3 as we jokingly call it).

Corrosion never sleeps, but it can be managed.
