karmoh,
I just had a look at the video this morning before I read your post, and I agree it looks really good.
I wonder how it performs on really big projects.
My current employer has projects that us about 1000 drawings and even more models for each project.
Are you actually using it?

Hi Beachcomber,
Yes, I have 3 current projects on the go. 2 small ones of approx 300 parts per assembly and one largish with 15 sub-assemblies each contain 75 parts.

It was set up and running within 10 minutes. It took about an hour to get used to the commands and buttons.

I loaded all 3 projects and a complete hardware folder with 1000’s of items. Once loaded (5mins) I then choose the properties I commonly use. File control then took about another 1min or 2 to collate the property info. Bingo all done.

Syncing files/folders for updated files takes no more that 10 seconds.

If this is the ver 1 it’s very good, worth the money just for the instant where used. Searches are virtually instant too.

So, all in all, a very promising start.

Frendly service to boot.

Sound ideal for the intended market of single and just a few seats.
I will recommend one of my previous clients has a look at it.

Karmoh,beachcomber,

I agree with you both it is a promising piece of software !
Hopefully they can get the basic file operations (like in the RM) also in the program by the end of the year.
Then I can finally let RM for what it is.
File management inside of SE is really a joke !

I am glad there are finally some company's seeing there is a lot to do inside SE. Also after seeing Some nice video's of ST3 I still have the feeling I am using something someone already have for many years. That's making me so.....

I don't think any of the main-stream packages have any decent file managemet ability built-in - but that's no excuse for SE not to have it.
Revision Manager is pretty powerfull (and dangerous) and I don't know if any of the others have anything to compare.
On the subject of ST, I just think sync mode is too complex.
As I've said before, having to add dimensions to the model to enable an exact size to be applied is just rediculous.
If you want to move a face and make it X from another face then you should be able to do that without adding diemensions.

beachcomber,

'but that's no excuse for SE not to have it.'

Correct ! Yes it is true that the competition is not doing it any better. Hopefully one day someone from development(possibly a new hired.) discovers the need for a much easier way to handle files inside of SE. I would love to see a way where I can rename/copy/save... (parts)files in the model tree or just by clicking the part on the graphics window and do whatever you want to do with it.

I have the feeling that most MCAD software suppliers are doing this on purpose.
We all know we could do a lot of work much easier then we do now.(At least I think we can, maybe I am wrong.)

As long as the companies that make the CAD also make separate full blown PDM/PLM systems I don't see much incentive for them to improve the file management withing the CAD package.

When we were actively looking at buying a PLM system our CAD company was all over us. As soon as it was clear we no longer had a budget for it, we barely saw them.

I've seen it done - but not with the result the user was expecting, and it caused me a big headache.

Revision Manager is a great tool, but just a little dated. I use it almost daily.

Kenat, you are definitely on the button. MCAD software suppliers do have a bigger picture...........SE is a small part of the Siemens group.

It's called putting a little salt on the bread........just enough innovation to pull in new clients and JUST enough tweaking to hold our attention.

But some basic (but effective) file management utility might bring in a lot more customers who only want a few seats.
It might make the difference between someone choosing SE or a rival product.

Most managements don't seem to think like that though. My own company refused to develop a low/mid range tool for a certain application because they were concerned it would hurt the market for the high end tool which was a sacred (cash) cow.

Now almost 5 years later we are looking again at that low/mid range tool.
