Field Issue: Pier caps clashing with proposed curb

Based on the construction documents, our proposed pier caps are clashing with the proposed curb.

Here are my suggestions:

1.) Build the curb around the pier cap.
2.) Shift the pier caps.

Please let me know if any potential issues with either of these suggestions. Any suggestions/ comments are appreciated.

Hard to tell from that, but it says the curb and columns clash, not the curb and pile cap. If it is the pile cap, you can lower that. If the columns, they have to take precedence unless you are going to redesign the superstructure above.

The clashing is just with the pier caps. Based on the cross-section shown in the link, the column wraps are 20" wide. The picture shows that the distance from the center of the columns to the curb is 1.20'. This is plenty of space for the 10" of the column wrap.

Would it be best to recommend that the curb be re-designed to avoid the pier column?

If the civil design can accommodate it, yes it would be simpler, however if not (which in my experience tends to be the case) why not just lower your pile cap below the curb elevation and just extend the column slightly.

@jayrod12 - I am not sure if it is possible to lower the pile cap below the curb elevation and just extend the column slightly. I will have to verify with the EOR.

To me that would be overall the easiest solution based on my experience with asking other consultants to change stuff.

Lowering the pile cap would be my suggestion as well if steel is not in fabrication. If steel is in fabrication, integrating the pile cap and curb would be the next option.
