I have a project which utilizes 2 inch diameter A354 Gr BD anchor bolts for a column base moment connection. The bolts are set with about 18 inches of projection from the concrete. The group was set somewhat askew - off about 1 inch in 16 from vertical. These bolts would be exceedingly difficult to remove and recast. My question is is there anyone with documentation or experience in field bending a threaded bolt of this type and size. Can these bolts be bent this limited amount without any detremental effects?

What about the base plate? It seems to me that a using a short slot might help, or just refab the base plate.

JamesS -

If your baseplate can be placed on the bolt pattern without modification, then I would highly recommend the use of spherical washers in this instance. This will accomodate the angle somewhat and allow the bolt preload with a minimum of bending. Also - because the bolts are skewed, calculations should be done to determine if the deviation from vertical will stress the fastener beyond acceptable limits.

My initial guess is that there's enough of a safety factor in the design to allow for your problem, but definitely verify the mods with justifiable numbers.

Good Luck

For certain you would have to derate their capacity.
Are they all skewed circumferentially toward center,
toward the od, or along circumference in one direction
or randomly? Can you heat them at the base before bending?
What is the liability and/or application?
