My edge-surface connection is being ignored by FEMAP. I have used it before but not sure what I am doing wrong now. Is it because the 2 plates are parallel to each other? Any help is appreciated.

are the elements associated with the geometry ? not sure how to verify ? Maybe plot (as a dummy group) elements using geometry ?

forget that ... I think you're gluing 3D elements of a 2D edge (so my questions don't apply)

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

In the pics above the edge is associated with a geometry and the elements is not.

Yes.
Here is how edge contact face pair detection works.

In your case faces are perpendicular and solver can not detect contact because green face and red "pseudo face" should be mostly parallel or at last it must be possible to project red face on green and vice versa.
