Can any one suggest me the possibility of modelling a slope in FEM and analysis the possible failure (different from conventional method of analysing circular slip surface)

you can use FLAC/slope to simulate such problem.

Thanks geotechman!!!!. Actually I am looking for some theoritical background to model the problem of slope stability analysis...thngs like how to formulate the matrix and proceed the rest of the calculation.... is it possible in exising softwares like SAP or STAAD

Look on the Rocscience web site, you'll find some downloadable papers on strength reduction ror analysis of slopes.

Commercially available software will generate the mesh (matrix?) but it can be a tedious process for complicated / thin strata to get good quality mesh.

Hi Shakildor,

I have just started using PLAXIS V.7.3. Slope stability analysis is modelled on plaxis by reducing the strength of the soil (c and phi) values until failure occurs.

I havent used it yet but I think its quite straight forward.

Plaxis is very easy to use. You will be up and running in one day.

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo,

yes, I also use Plaxis to study the stability of slopes. And I also did quite a few compariosn of Fs values from Plaxis with those from conventional limite equilibrium methods. Thay are very close to each other....
