Consultancy IMX usually amounts to effectively interpreting the system requirements from a combination of experience, some knowledge of the latest state of the art methods and the words coming from the client's mouth, communicating those requirements to the engineers actually doing the work, ensuring the results are within the necessary system requirements (and no more) and justifying to the client "in the nicest way possible" how what s/he's getting satisfies the system requirements and them how what they want, they can't afford. The reason for which I did make #1 #1. Its the most common of all and can get everyone into trouble, especially consultants, if the impacts to engineering hours, schedule and project cost are not very carefully controlled. To avoid later problems, best policy is to have the client sign off on the manhours, schedule and project cost adjustments BEFORE any additonal work is started.
