hi, im looking for the fastes counter that is possible to get my hands on. looking in the range of counting things in the 30Ghz range, is this possible?

pls dont laugh if is sounds unrealistic :D

I won't laugh but I am curious where you would use such a fast counter, 30GHz is way up there in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Alternatively you can mix the signal down with a local oscillator of say 31GHz and count the difference frequency, if you are making your own system.

I have a question along these lines. Are there binary counter chips that work up to 250 MHz.

If not what is the fasest logic family that actually includes either toggeling flip-flops or counters?

I am starting to answer my own question. The fastest counters seem to be in FPGAs from Xilina, AMD, and Actel. SO far I have seen referance of up to 400 MHz.

Searsjames: ECLINPS can co it easily -- if discrete solution is OK. XILINX is cheaper , if software cost can
be amortized.
