Does anyone have a reference that specifies the effective surface area of different size bolts? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I have been use to referring to it as the tensile stress area.
 
There are three different terms in the first three posts in this thread. Each is a valid (but different) quantity, so please clarify which you need.

Okay, lets start over. I am looking for a reference that states typical tensile and shear stress areas for bolts. Thanks for the link MintJulep, however I cannot run any .exe files on my computer (go figure, thats the government for you). Sorry for any confusion, I am a little rusty on fastener terminology. Any additional help is much appreciated. Thanks.
 
I suspect that SPS, or their local rep would send you a good old fashioned paper copy if you asked nicely.
 
The AISC Manual of Steel Construction ASD 9th Edition lists in Part 4 tables 1-A through 1-E the allowable loads in tension and shear for various ASTM bolts and threaded fasteners. This source uses gross (nominal) area, that is: for a 1" bolt the area is 0.7854 square inches. The allowable tensile and shear stresses vary based on material.

The Aluminum Association "Aluminum Design Manual" second edition uses the root area for calculating tension and the root or nominal area for calculating shear depending if threads are in the shear plane or not. The allowable stresses again vary with material.

I'd bet that the ASTM, AMSI and US Military have specs for fasteners of many kinds.

Some other good references:

SAE AS5054, "Areas for Calculating Stress or Load Values for Externally and Internally Threaded UNJ Fasteners"

ASME B1.1-1989, "Unified Inch Screw Threads (UN and UNR Thread Form)"

FED-STD-H28 - This has many parts which cover multiple kinds of fasteners.
