Double branch elbows are permitted as per B16.5 but material has to be cast or forged. So this may be called unlisted component. As per Cl 304 the unlisted components has to undergo detailed strength calculation(including calculation as per Sec VIII Div-2). Also design should be proven in the past for intended service(ref Cl. 304.7.2 (a))

gotuam, I agree with you this qualifies as an unlisted component, but where in B16.5 are double branch elbows mentioned or permitted? Where does it say it has to be cast or forged then?
B31.3 para 304 doesnt specifically require an VIII-2 analysis, look 304.7.2 closely, there 3 other options there as well.
Hence, 304.7.2(a) isnt a requirement either, it's just one of the 4 options allowed under 304.7.2.
Read the Code carefully.

Regarding Cl. 304.7.2 it is clear that calculation has to be done. Sec VIII -2 is an excellent basis for calculations. These calculations needs to be substantiated (or validated). One option for this is from by past operating data of similar component at similar service conditions. Of course there are other options for substantiation of calculation.

Just about anything can be acceptable to ASME B31.3 if you do the design and testing work or something similar has worked OK for the past 20 years....
The real issue is the stress concentration at the crotch of the Y piece and that strange sweepolet type thing.
But why isn't this being made with recognised components?.
What is the service?
Low pressure or atmospheric water - probably Ok
High pressure or high temperature flammable liquids - not OK
Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

I think I understand what youre trying to get at, but (the way I understand) B16.5 is that sees such double branch elbows as an integral item. What the OP has done is fabricate something from several parts and attached falnges to it, which imo is something different than what B16.5 intends.

KevinNZ, don't be quick to knock flat faced flanges. The universal acceptance of raised face flanges is problematic for applications that may experience corrosion from the outside such as in tank installation and deck of boats and ships.
