Extreme Torsional Irregularity

Hello All,

Can I neglect extreme torsional irregularity if my overall building sway in the model is in withing prescribed limits? The building has masonry shear walls. Due to arch constraints, I am unable to move the center of rigidity of the building to keep the torsion in control. Any input would be really appreciated.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Adjust the center or rigidity by adding expansion joints in the masonry walls at strategic locations and/or disconnecting some of the wall segments from the diaphragm.

As KootK's link says, in some seismic situations, and in accordance with some design codes, extreme torsional irregularity is forbidden. In that case, the architect would have to rethink.
