External HP dat device on WinNT 4.0

External HP dat device on WinNT 4.0 reads 'tape is write protected' when trying to archive stuff on a new tape which is not protected.
Has anyone have ideas on how to overcome this?

Has it always done this, or is this the first time? Also, is it just with this one tape, or all tapes from now on?

bpatt, the problem in the end was that the dat device was dds4 and was not backward compatible with orignal dds tapes. thanks for your reply.
