Exterior Steel Painting Question

Doing some reinforcement and renovations to an existing structure with structural steel exposed to the elements.

Currently, I've specified that the contractor "remove rust and loose mill scale. Clean steel in accordance with SSPC SP-3."

Any suggestions for the primer/paint I should specify? Note-form specifications are appearing on the drawings.

Recommended for you

I like to use two coats of epoxy and a topcoat of polyurethane. It might be overkill, but I sleep at night. All the major coating amnufacturers (Tnemec, Devoe, Sherwin Williams, etc.) make a myriad of systems that will work.
 
ditto what Jed wrote. You can also include manufactures such as Wasser, Carboline, and Mercury Paint.
 
Agree with Jed and Bridge, having been on projects field painting bridge beams,they used a 3 coat system, I believe it was Sherwin Williams. Each coat was a different color to ensure everything was coated and had different wet mil thicknesses for each coat.

Agree with above except that I would specify SP6 as a minimum and SP10 if necessary for the coating
