Extended range proximity sensors

I have an application for an extended range proximity sensor but can't find one on the market. This would be similar to products sold for child or laptop protection where once a child (or laptop) with the sensor gets out of range, an alarm goes off. The technology sold seems to be limited to 20 to 40 feet type of range. Is the technology extendable to longer ranges such as 200 - 300 feet?
