A large water main has become partiality exposed in a good sized creek due to bank erosion and channel movement. Its happened over the last 40 years since it was installed. I’m looking at ways to add cover to protect the pipe and stabilize it. Riprap, sheet piles and gabions have all been kicked around. Relaying the pipe would cost a fortune so that option is not really on the table right now.

Does anyone know of any similar project or know of any design guidance for protecting existing pipes exposed in creek channels? Thanks.

articulated block mattress might be a quick fix, far cheaper than pile driving. just place filter fabric and then the mattress on top and anchor down

While re-laying the pipe would cost a fortune, what would the costs be if it breaks?

Thanks, it would defiantly be a bad day if the pipe broke, but I think we have time to weigh our options. I like the articulated block idea and I'm looking into it.

...definitely be a bad day.

Avoid gabions in any application where water is flowing.
