Do large Mat foundations require expansion joints?

Good afternoon gramy13,

Not normally (contraction/shrinkage is more the issue). They will have construction joints if necessary but are often placed continuously. Making provisions for heat of hydration need to be considered and can involve slowing hydration with special mixes using slag cement and/or fly ash. Cooling tubes are sometimes used although not as often as they were at one time.

regards,
Michel
