I am analyzing an existing structure for new loads that will be applied to it. The structure was built in the 30's or 40's. What was the common yield strength of wide flanges back then, was it still A36? I have a 5th Ed. AISC book, but was unable to locate the common strength. Thanks for the help in advance.

Back then the yield strength (for structural shapes) was generally at 30 to 33 ksi with the tensile strength at 60 to 72 ksi.
You should get AISC's Design Guide 15. It is an excellent resource for working with older steel structures.

The exact numbers that JAE presented are on page 346 of my copy of 5th Ed. AISC. They are list in the "Strength of Materials" table for "Steel, bridges and bldgs., ships".
