Rather very good at producing Drawing Based BOMs.

Now trying to produce my first Excel based BOM. Totally lost - where to start and how ? The INSERT sub menu has the EXCEL BOM dimmed.

I am sure the topic has been discussed on this forum in the past, but somehow I seem not to be able find proper threads (inspite of the search).

Could anybody give me some hints - like previous threads.

In the meantime - will keep searching .. :-(

Thanks.

You will not be able to insert an Excel based BOM if another BOM already exists in the drawing file. If no others exist, it should not be dimmed.

Yes, I know that. I produced a totally new assy from totally new parts (just for the exercise) and the Excel BOM is still dimmed.

Go to the drawing tree and delete the BOM

There is NO BOM - brand new parts, brand new drawing, using sample sheet from SW (just in case my company's template has "something" in it)

There should be a separate forum on this topic. There are more questions about this than anything else within SolidWorks.

After reading a couple of threads - should I consider an Excel based BOM's as the thing of the past ?

Do a search here for "BOM".

No ... all you need to do is select (highlight) a view before trying to insert an Excel BOM. Once a view is selected, the Excel option will no longer be dimmed.

EXCEL BOM is dimmed because you have not click on the drawing on the page. It happened to me too just a few hours ago, I went crazy trying to undimmed it.

The I click on the view I just placed and boila!! EXCEL BOM un-dimmed.

Hope it helps

Having problem with custom columns on the excel BOM. I added columns and followed SolidWorks help to link the new column with the properties of the model. For example I added a CODE column. I have a CODE property in the model and have named it in the excel bom to match. When I bring the bom into the drawing the CODE is not filling in (it is blank). Any suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
NT/GL
