What happens when you put 1200V through 24G wire that is rated for only 1000V?

A coworker asked for my help in this matter. He is conducting a dielectric test on actuators. The test requires he use 24G wire that is rated for 1000V. The dielectric test instructs to put 1200V through it.

What happens after repeated tests are performed on the same wiring? Would the wire disintegrate over time?

Many thanks in advance.

The 1000 V rating of the insulation is a continuous rating. Short-time dielectric tests above this value are common and should not shorten the life of the insulation, especially since the test voltage does not exceed the rated voltage by much.

If you are concerned, you should be able to find the recommended test voltages for the wire under test from the manufacturer.
